State-of-the-Art Engine Diagnostics

Brown’s Alignment, Brake, and Auto Repair, one of Raleigh’s leading auto repair shops, uses state-of-the-art equipment to diagnose engine and emissions control component issues. Our equipment conducts engine diagnostics utilizing the OBDII (On-Board Diagnostics) system to access and pinpoint problems. This warning system helps us catch small issues before they escalate. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandates that vehicle manufacturers make emissions information available to independent shops like ours, ensuring we have access to the same data available to dealerships.

The Role of the Check Engine Light

in Engine Diagnostics

The check engine light, or malfunction indicator light (MIL), warns of an issue when the vehicle’s computer detects a problem with the engine or emissions system. Activated to alert you, this indicator is crucial for monitoring and ensuring compliance with environmental guidelines from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Under specific conditions, the check engine light may blink or flash, signaling a severe engine misfire. In such cases, the driver must promptly reduce speed and seek service. Severe misfires can quickly damage emission control system components, particularly the catalytic converter, which is often costly to replace. Drivers should also refer to their vehicle owner’s manual for manufacturer-specific information.

Note: The state of North Carolina requires vehicles to pass an annual safety inspection. If your vehicle is less than 20 years old, an annual emissions inspection is also required if the vehicle is registered in certain counties (including Wake County). Your vehicle will fail the emissions inspection if the check engine light is on. Check out our North Carolina State Inspection page for more information.
